The M4A3 (76)W version of the M4 Sherman had a redesigned upper hull, and a new turret armed with a 76mm gun, which improved its ability to fight. The “W” in the designation signifies the “wet storage” version, with ammunition being stored in boxes surrounded with water, in an attempt to lessen the chances of an explosion due to internal fires.
